About The F5S Limited
The F5S Limited takes Northfield's popular S Series and elevates it with premium materials and upgraded appointments. Released in late 2024 to commemorate the centennial of the iconic F5 mandolin, this model brings together some of Northfield's best tonewoods with features typically found on higher-priced instruments.
The same building team and techniques used on their master models ensure consistent quality and that distinctive Northfield voice that has earned the company recognition from Grammy-winning artists worldwide.
What Makes It "Limited"
Northfield produces these in small batches due to three factors: the extra time required for the upgraded finish and appointments, the scarcity of the premium tonewoods used, and their commitment to offering exceptional value. After nearly 20 years of building mandolins, Northfield has accumulated a carefully curated collection of special wood that they draw from sparingly for these instruments.
Upgrades From The Standard F5S
The F5S Limited includes several notable upgrades over the standard model: premium Adirondack spruce or Engelmann spruce tops paired with premium book-matched maple backs, a full-gloss nitrocellulose finish, deluxe Gotoh tuners, an engraved Gilchrist/Northfield tailpiece, and the distinctive torch inlay in abalone and mother of pearl.
Marshall, Michigan Quality Control
Each instrument receives meticulous setup and final inspection before leaving Northfield's shop in Michigan. This includes professional adjustment of string height, intonation, and neck relief to optimize playability and tone.
Airloom Recurve Case
Every F5S Limited includes the Airloom Recurve case, a collaboration between Northfield and German case maker Jakob Winter.
The Recurve uses an innovative process that transforms plant materials like hemp and flax into a rigid, protective shell through heat and pressure—no toxic glues required. The result is exceptional protection in a surprisingly lightweight package.
The case features custom molding designed specifically for mandolins, with foam blocks for shock protection and an accessory compartment for picks, strings, and other essentials. Weather-resistant construction and a comfortable handle make it ideal for everything from local gigs to cross-country travel.
